Information

LASIK (or Laser In-situ Keratomileusis) is an FDA approved surgical procedure that changes the shape of the cornea (the front, clear part of the eye) to eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. LASIK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

After numbing the eye with eye drops, a flap is created in the front part of the cornea. At The Eye Center of Oak Ridge, “all-laser” or “bladeless” LASIK is performed. Instead of using a metal blade, we use a femtosecond laser to create a flap with less pressure and more precision. After lifting the flap out of the way, a second laser is used to precisely shape the cornea to change the way it focuses. The flap is then placed back in its original position and allowed to heal in place.

Are you a Candidate for LASIK?

Are you a good candidate for LASIK? The following questions will help you know:

  •   Are you currently near or farsighted, with or without astigmatism, and require glasses or contact lenses to see better? Do you want to be free from glasses or contact lenses?
  •   Are you over the age of 18?
  •   Do you have any severe eye disease that could limit your vision? LASIK requires a healthy eye before the procedure for optimal vision results.
  •   Are you pregnant or nursing? Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the focusing of the eye. Patients should wait approximately 6 months after pregnancy or nursing before considering LASIK.
  •   Do you have any inflammatory or autoimmune disease? Any condition that can affect normal healing would prevent you being a LASIK candidate.
  •   Are your eyes stable? Your glasses or contact lenses prescription should be relatively stable.

Don’t be fooled by low cost LASIK providers offering deals as low as $500. These are typically bait and switch promotions where the actual price of the procedure is much higher. At The Eye Center of Oak Ridge, our doctors use the latest and best technology (bladeless all-laser custom LASIK) as well as offers personalized care with unequaled access to your actual LASIK surgeon before and after your procedure.

Our office accepts all major Credit Cards, as well as, Care Credit, which our business office can assist you with applying.

You’ve Got Questions, We’ve Got Answers

Does LASIK hurt?

During your procedure, your eyes will be numbed by anesthetic drops. Some patients experience a pressure sensation during the flap creation, similar to someone pushing firmly on the eyes. Pain is not expected. During the excimer laser reshaping portion of the surgery, no pain is felt. Many patients report not feeling anything throughout the whole procedure. After the procedure, your eyes may burn or feel scratchy for a few hours. It is best to keep your eyes closed and rest when you get home. You will be given eye drops to use to help soothe the eyes.

Is LASIK expensive?

When you consider the long term costs associated with prescription glasses, contact lenses, solution etc., LASIK is usually more economical in the long run. At the Eye Center of Oak Ridge, only the best, most advanced LASIK treatments are performed and are competitively priced.

Am I a candidate for LASIK?

Most patients that need to wear glasses or contact lenses are candidates for refractive laser surgery. It is important to do a thorough exam to ensure the procedure is safe for you. See our LASIK Candidate Section for information or schedule a free LASIK consult today.
