Dr. Smalley

Ophthalmologist and eye surgeon Lee A. Smalley, M.D., has provided comprehensive ophthalmology care to the Oak Ridge community since 1977. He is one of the founding members of The Eye Center of Oak Ridge. Dr. Smalley retired from ophthalmic surgery in 2007 after 30 years.  He continues to practice medical ophthalmology and provide LASER treatments.

 

Dr. Smalley received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1972, where he served as president of his senior class and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha academic honorary. He served his internship at Pima County Hospital and his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona, both in Tucson. He completed the Basic Science Course in Ophthalmology at Stanford University.

 

He is board-certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

 

Dr. Smalley has contributed his time to both the medical community and the community at large. He served as Chief of Staff at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge and on its Credentials Committee for 10 years. He has volunteered as a science reader for the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Oak Ridge unit of RFB&D.

 

Dr. Smalley has been actively involved in the development of computerized medical record systems. He is the Consultant for Ophthalmology for AllMeds Incorporated and currently uses electronic medical records in his daily practice.

 

He is married with two grown children. His wife, Linda, has degrees in English and educational statistics and is retired from Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Engineering. His daughter, Carrie, is the mother of two and lives in Las Vegas where her husband is an USAF pilot. Dr. Smalley's son, Chad, obtained his medical degree at his father's alma mater and is practicing orthopedic surgery in Chattanooga.

 

Dr. Smalley enjoys spending his free time bicycling, kayaking and hiking in the Tennessee mountains.
